The "Heart of Things Live in Paris" is amazing indeed!! I love how Dennis grooves in odd-meters in this CD. Like the 2nd track in 5, WOW!!

However, I was not touched at all by his drum solo. For me, Dennis' strength is not so much in soloing as in supporting everyone around. Dennis is at his best when great musicians are there pulling it out of him sort-of-speak. And believe me, when I say "at his best" I mean "AT HIS BEST!!" I much prefer the solos of Omar Hakim, Paul Brochu, Peter Erskine and of course Vinnie... Etc...

Otmaro Ruiz's playing is also sooo amazing on that CD!!

P.S: I must add that I enjoyed this MP3 DC solo more than the one on the Mclaughlin Live in Paris CD... Yepper, nice clip!!!!

So is Bill evans, Let the juice loose and the wayne krantz signals album [but its only 3 chambers drumming tracks].

Thanx for the info, D [& guys]. The Coster alb. I mentioned in my last post has DC on all but 2 trax [Smith]. Altho it's great play'g on the record'g, much of it is on the 'lite'/commercial jazz side, altho not quite into the murky depths of the 'smooth'/'ex-laxy'/'constitutional' [as in 'early morning'- ] jazz genre; but it's not too bad [& not bad for 99 cents, fer shore. [img]wink.gif[/img] ]

BTW - what is it exactly about DC's recorded solos that makes u guys say 'they don't really do it for me'....

I've seen Dennis live twice with mike stern. Both times the rest of the band walked off, dennis solo'd for 25 minutes, it was like being at a Pearl clinic. i'm afraid to say... it killed the gig both times for me and, I dreaded hearing dennis was on the next tour.
I wanted to see stern and berg NOT a pearl clinic.

Good point. I don't wanna hear a 25[!!] min. solo by ANY1 during a music concert, either! Heck, 5 is sometimes too long, 1/2 the time. Of course, I DO like solos, esp. when it's done over the vamp/kix/hits/form, or coming out of the form into it; but 25 min. is too freakin long, IMO...

Altho it might seem to me that maybe the '25 min.' thing might've been more of Stern's idea, perhaps[?]

& Me2 - on the 'up-side,' it's pretty cool that u were able 2 c Berg [img]smile.gif[/img] - evidently he's passed away [car accident] [img]frown.gif[/img] ....

I can undersatnd what some of you guys mean about dennis' solos.....and i wouldnt like to see a 25min drum solo in a musical concert.....less is more.....to hear a smaller solo over one of mike's cool guitar vamps has far more effect (i saw weckl do it a couple of weeks ago)......however dennis' playing and soloing is still unbelivable and very original........he seems to steal the show from almost every band leader........whether it be stern or niacin etc

Fuse, these 3 albums have some of the best playing in a fusion context you'll ever hear, I promise. There are some lame tunes as there are on every fusion album for some reason, but there are some really incredible ones as well. do yourself a favor and pick them up. Maybe you can find them cheap here:

Re: Dennis live; I've seen him 18-20 times live. He soloed everytime which is cool, but I would say he played the same solo at 17 of those gigs. I'm a HUGE Dennis fan and have most of the albums he's put out but I'm just saying his soloing doesn't do it for me. It's the same everytime. Plus, it frustrates me that he's capable of being so funky and yet resorts to the same bullshit singles down the toms over bass drum flurry/cross cymbal crap he does every time. I mean, some people (like me) don't have that deep a bag so they have to recycle. Dennis is not one of those guys, he's just being lazy IMO.

For me,

I do find that Dennis does repeat himself a lot. Is it laziness? Maybe, I don't know for sure. Listen to the way Omar Hakim solos on Scofield's Still Warm CD. He flows more into the melody and he seems to be riding that wave and for me I find it more musical and that's what I look for in solos. Or listen to Paul Brochu's solo on the UZEB World Tour CD and again, the way the whole solo is musically orchastrated, WOW BINGO!! That does it for me. That's also why I love Erskine, Alex Acuna so much!

Dennis remains a favorite and I do enjoy some of his soloing too. The solo he pulls on the Brecker Bros. Live video (GRP) is nice!! I also have a live recording of Dennis playing the "Mr. DC" tune from the "Heart of Things" Studio CD and WOW!! T'was taken from a AM Radio station so the quality is so-so. He's got that Sax/Drums duo happening and Dennis' listening edge comes out B-I-G!! Gary Thomas is the on on sax and Dennis supports him in a awe inspiring way! The solo on the McLaughlin CD previously mentionned by Derek is kinda tasteless musically. Nice DC signature fills here and there but ---?? Then he get into this "baio" feel and again ---?? I just find he brought it out at the wrong time, but DC is human too so. I much prefer Alex Acuna in that latin context anytime!! That goes without saying, I know.

yeah, Dennis' solos usually don't do anything for me.

The live solo I was referring to was the one I witnessed live on that tour when they were in San Francisco. Not the one on the album.
